Founded in Rome on 11 February 1905 with the purpose of generating and distributing electricity, it then came under control of IRI and in 1939 ownership was transferred to Società Meridionale di Elettricità (SME) of Naples, which it remained part of until the restructuring of the Italian electricity industry in 1962.
