Founded in Rome on 28 September 1948, LA SPAICO was headquartered in the same city. A large majority shareholding was underwritten by Finsider.

In 1951, still without having performed any activities, the company moved its headquarters to Genoa and changed its name to Società Italiana di Siderurgia e Meccanica - Sidermec S.p.A. (Italian Steel and Engineering Co.)

In 1952 it was taken over by Cornigliano S.p.A.
