Founded on 16 October 1940 with its headquarters in Genoa; the shareholding was underwritten equally by Terni, Società per l'Industria e l'Elettricità (Industry and Electricity Corporation) and Ilva Alti Forni e Acciaierie d'Italia.

The company based its industrial facilities in Bagnoli. In 1943, due to the war, the headquarters was moved to Florence, and the following year to Voghera. In 1946 the company headquarters returned to Genoa. In 1950 contracts were signed with I.M.I within the framework agreement for economic co-operation between Italy and the USA for application of the Marshal Plan (E.R.P.).

The headquarters was moved to Rome in 1954 then to Naples in 1964. In 1966 a merger saw the company taken over by ItalsiderS.p.A.
