Founded in 1899, the company originated with the ironworks built by Filippo Tassara in 1865. The activities were built up by his sons, who in 1879 Incorporated a company named "Filippo Tassara & Figli"; in 1899 this was renamed to Società Anonima Ferriere di Voltri, which purchased the Darfo plant from Elettrosiderurgica Camuna (Camuna Electrical Steelworks) and the Oneglia plant from Siderurgica Ligure Occidentale (Western Liguria Steelworks). In 1930 the company was taken over by Ilva Alti Forni e Acciaierie d'Italia.
