The company was founded with headquarters in Aosta on 24 September 1918. In the same year the Società Anonima Miniere Carbonifere del Ruitor (Ruitor Coal Mines Joint-Stock Co.) was founded.

In 1924 the company moved its head office to Milan. In 1925, following continual losses, the company was wound up and soon afterwards the company name was changed to S.A. Miniere Carbonifere di La Thuile (La Thuile Coal Mines Joint-Stock Co.).

In 1928 the company was refounded as S.A. Nazionale "La Thuile", with headquarters in Turin.
In 1936 the company merged with the Società Anonima Nazionale "Cogne" joint-stock company.
