Società Finanziaria Siderurgica Finsider (Finsider Steelworks Finance Co.) was founded in Rome by IRI on 2 July 1937 with the company purpose of purchasing shareholdings in companies in the steel business, performing technical co-ordination with the same companies and providing them with the required financial assistance in the most appropriate forms.

On 1 January 1989 Finsider was wound up and both its shareholdings and subsidiary company plants were transferred to ILVA spa, which took on the role of leading state-controlled steel company.
