Declaration of significant historic interest of 13/03/2006

The papers representing the archive of the Finanziaria Marittima (Finmare) company were acquired for free use in November 1999 with the collaboration of the Archival Superintendency for the Region of Liguria.

Finmare, which went into voluntary receivership in 1999, was set up by I.R.I. in 1936 within a state reorganisation and streamlining project of its maritime services, which aimed to coordinate, address and guarantee the activities of the Italian, Lloyd Triestino, Adriatica and Tirrenia lines with adequate financial means; these had also been incorporated in 1936, and Finmare became the majority shareholder.

These lines were assigned the four sectors of maritime traffic which grouped together the passenger and freight lines and services of “primary national interest” with the Americas, Africa, Asia, the Adriatic and the eastern Mediterranean, the Tyrrhenian sea, Libya and the western Mediterranean.

The archival documentation, deposited in three different stages due to the time constraints and legal requirements of the holding company, is composed of around 2,200 items (registers and envelopes), in good condition and partially organised, with documents ranging in date from 1936 to the 1980s, produced both by Finmare and its subsidiaries and associate companies at the time.

To date it has been possible to perform only an initial check and partially catalogue the archival material, which has allowed similar document groups to be identified relating above all to correspondence and corporate, administrative and accounting documentation and a summary list of the size to be prepared.

More specifically, the Foundation is in possession of the minutes of the board of administration, shareholders', board of auditors, management and executive committee meetings, both for Finmare from 1937 to the late 1970s and for the most important shipping companies. It also contains all annual reports, both printed and typewritten, again from 1937 onwards, as well as those for the companies which came into service over time, such as Aurora di Navigazione, Grisella, Mutuamar. Selom, Sirm, Almare, Sidermar, Toremar, Caremar. Siremar.

The inventory books and daybooks of the holding company have no significant gaps, and the various series of letter-books collected in 209 volumes and 30 file folders relate to the years 1937 - 1976.

A very interesting part of the archive, which will take the most time for the archivists to inventory, is composed of around 600 envelopes and binders containing dossiers, documents, files, leaflets and publications on topics relating to various activities performed in the 1970s and 80s. This paperwork represents correspondence, service orders, preparatory papers for the board of directors and shareholders' meetings, parliamentary questions and inquiries, legislative provisions, contracts, purchase and sale orders for ships, nominations of board members and auditors, tax documentation and advertising materials.

A final deposit may further enlarge some of the series, for example that relating to HR, which currently consists of 54 registers of payrolls and pay slips.
