Declaration of significant historic interest of 13/03/2006

Donated in December 2000 by heirs Beppe and Andrea Manzitti, this archive documents the entrepreneurial and managerial activities of Francesco Manzitti.

Born in Genoa on 11 March 1908, he received an economics diploma from the Scuola Superiore di Commercio in Genoa and a degree in law from the University of Milan; Francesco Manzitti then began working as a loss adjuster in the field of maritime accidents, an activity he would continue throughout his life. During the Second World War he was an active participant in the resistance movement, a member of C.L.N. for Liguria and C.L.N.A.I. as a representative of the liberal party.
In April 1945 he was nominated president of the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, where he remained in office until 1954. President of the Board of Governors of the Merchant Navy from 1948, in 1952 he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by the French government; in the same year he was nominated as President of Finmare, an office he held until 1959.
In 1961 he was awarded the presidency of the Port of Genoa Independent Consortium, an office he held for five years, until 1966. Among the other important positions Francesco Manzitti held, of note are the first President of the Autostrada dei Fiori motorway and director of the Istituto Bancario San Paolo of Turin (1946-1972), the Italian Committee of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, and the Italian Naval Register RINA. After suffering a stroke in 1967, Francesco Manzitti passed away ten years later in September 1977.

The archive, for which a size list is available, is composed of 95 binders (envelopes, file folders and files). It contains in particular correspondence and paperwork relating to the activities of Finmare and other group companies; minutes of the Finmare board and shareholders' meeting; minutes of the meetings of the general assembly and Port of Genoa Independent Consortium committee; documentation of the Board of Governors of the Merchant Navy, Lloyd's Register of Shipping and International Chamber of Commerce. There are also print publications and documentation.
